Emergency Food Supply
Swine Flu Food Shortage?

Nitro-Pak Preparedness Center

Emergency food supply. Be prepared for a pandemic food shortage, especially if you live in a country that is dependent on others for food. Plan now for your emergency water storage and food storage supply.

Most Americans can't imagine a time when food would be in short supply—short of a natural disaster or emergency like a hurricane, flood or earthquake.

But, having food in an emergency food storage area may be your family's salvation in a time of international need like a flu pandemic.

Scotland is one country that is not taking a plentiful food supply for granted. The Scottish government is developing a new national food and drink policy. Legislation will be aimed at protecting Scotland's farms, and fishing and aquaculture businesses.

Scotland is considering a possible food shortage during the swine flu pandemic, as well as other possible scenarios.

Richard Lochhead, the Rural Affairs and Environment Secretary, warned recently that "a plentiful food supply can't be taken for granted".

Interruption to the Food Supply

That's true for Scotland, and it's true for the rest of us also. In the event of a serious swine flu pandemic , the food supply chain will be interrupted.

People ill with swine flu will not be able to tend to their farms. Truckers will not be able to drive. Food processing plants will have large numbers of people absent. Food grocers will have absenteeism and, if the food is not delivered, empty shelves.

In other words, even if you have always known food to be plentiful, you may experience a food shortage—even in your own neighborhood!

Gasoline may not be delivered, and, if you run out of gas, you won't be able to go very far in your car or truck.

You would be wise to have an emergency food supply on hand.

Pandemic Quarantine

Even if the food supply is not interrupted in your area, you may not be able to go to the store. Your city, town or county may be quarantined.

If government officials deem it to be “dangerous” for people to mingle in public places (because swine flu is circulating), you may be quarantined to your home.

If you are placed under a quarantine , you will not be able to run to the grocery store for food.

If you are not actually confined to your home, you may choose to stay out of public places voluntarily—like stores and public transportation facilities. As people did in Mexico City.

And, unlike natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, you will not have government trucks delivering food and water to your neighborhood. You will be on your own.

Don't get caught short! Plan now for any emergencies. Get started on your emergency food supply so that you will be prepared if and when it becomes a necessity.
