Emergency Lighting

Be prepared for emergency lighting if you are in a natural disaster such as a tornado, hurricane, earthquake or flood.

If your town has a major power outage, you will be forced to find alternative ways of lighting your home, with no electricity.

In the event of a power outage, make sure that you have some basic emergency supplies on hand, as part of your emergency preparedness plan.

Here are some easy to find lighting items that you can store easily and safely:

  • Candles - Buy the candles in glass containers, or use small, votive candles and place them in glass containers. Don't use candles in drafty areas or near flammable objects—like curtains!

  • Matches - If you have candles, you need matches. Buy more matches than you think you'll need. You may have to use them for other things, like starting a fire to cook.

  • Mirror - Did you know that, if you place a mirror behind a lighting source, you will magnify its effect? Make those candles really count by placing a mirror behind them!

  • Flashlights - Make sure you have at least one for each person. You will need lots of batteries to make sure they will work. Also, look for crank flashlights that work when you manually turn a handle. You won't need batteries for these.

  • Oil lamps and Oil

  • Hurricane lamps - these can be used with either lamp oil or kerosene. If you buy kerosene, make sure you have a safe container to store it in.

  • Battery powered camping lanterns - and batteries

  • Propane or alcohol camping lanterns

Make sure that you have a good supply of emergency items for lighting. That way you'll be prepared for anything from a flu pandemic to a hurricane, tornado, snow storm or other natural disaster.
