Emergency radios have come a long way in the last few years. While you can still buy one that uses batteries, many radios can be charged with a crank or solar power, and most have additional features.
Although many of these radios were designed to be used in emergencies and natural disasters, many people find them to be handy, and they use them all the time.Your survival radio can go with you when you are working in the garden, or you can take it with you when you go camping…

Survival Radio FeaturesWith so many great features to choose from, the hardest part of buying a survival radio may be picking the radio that you need, with the best features for your family.Here are some things to consider: - Coverage - What kind of stations does the radio receive? Does it get NOAA Weather, AM and FM? If you’ll be using it all the time (and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t), you’ll want to make sure that your favorite station is included.
- Energy Source - Does the radio run on batteries exclusively? Can you charge it with a hand crank or solar power?
- Indoor/Outdoor? - Is the radio water resistant? Was it designed with a rugged exterior, for outdoor use?

- Features - What other features are included? These could include:
- Flashlight
- Flashing beacon – great for recovery operations. If you are trapped or lost, this would be a great feature.
- Alarm clock – if you are taking turns standing watch with someone, or you need to check on rising flood water in the middle of the night, this feature could come in handy.
- Emergency siren – People trapped in debris are often found because of sounds.
- Cell phone charger - Your cell phone may or may not work, depending on whether the towers are in service and the power is off, but you may want this feature for camping, etc.
The cost of these survival radios has come down considerably, so there is no reason that you should put off getting one. In an emergency, it might be your only way to know what’s going on…
