Home Made Dog Treats

What do home made dog treats have to do with a pandemic or a natural disaster?

Making homemade dog treats can keep life more normal for both you and your dog during a quarantine. And it can be a fun activity for the kids...

I'm sure you are thinking that dog treats are the LAST thing you will be worried about during a natural disaster or swine flu pandemic.

But, wait a second... Let's give it another thought.

If you are placed under a quarantine during a swine flu pandemic , and you are not sick, you will have a lot of time on your hands. Or, if you are stuck at home for a couple of weeks after a blizzard or severe snow storm, you'll start to get cabin fever.

And, especially if you have children, you will need to have some entertaining things to do.

What better activity (and more educational) than learning to cook? And, no matter how the homemade dog treats turn out, your dog will LOVE them!

Here are some things to keep in mind when making your own home made dog treats:

  • Use healthy dog treat ingredients that are known to be safe for dogs. Many of the ingredients that you have in your kitchen right now are fine to use.

  • Use ingredients that you know your dog likes. For example, if your dog loves peanut butter or cheese, either of those would be a good ingredient to include.

  • Some ingredients that are healthy for people can be foods that are toxic to dogs.

Make sure you don't include any of those. Examples would be grapes, chocolate, walnuts and garlic.

  • Make it fun for both of you! Use cute cookie cutter shapes like hearts or dog bones.

  • Store the treats safely so that they will stay fresh.

Baking dog treats is fun—no matter what the occasion. And once you start to make special dog treats for your dog, you'll both be hooked! Here is a dog cookie recipe to help you get started.

So, whether you:

  • get caught short because you weren't fully prepared for being quarantined during the pandemic
  • you decide to voluntarily quarantine your family (and you run out of dog treats)
  • or you just think it would be fun to make some treats for your favorite pet...

I think you'll have fun making home made dog treats. And I KNOW your dog will!
