Natural Flu Remedies for Pregnant Women
Natural flu remedies may be an option for pregnant women who don't want to take antiviral drugs or for women with influenza during pregnancy – if the swine flu develops resistance to flu medicines.
I used two sources when determining the safety of these natural flu remedies for pregnant or nursing women:- Natural Medicines - American Pharmaceutical Association
- Medical Advisor: Alternative and Conventional Treatments - Time Life

Did you know that the only flu treatment (a treatment that is safe for pregnant women) that worked in 1918-19 was homeopathy? It's true, and it's been well documented!
The following herbal flu remedies and supplements were included in these books and are safe for pregnant women, did not include a warning for pregnant women or suggested consulting your doctor before using them. If you absolutely should consult your doctor, I will tell you that. In all cases, if you are able to discuss these natural flu remedies with your health practitioner, you should do that. The person responsible for your health care on an ongoing basis, knows you best and can help you make the best decisions. - Apple Juice
- Applesauce
- Cayenne In large doses it can produce vomiting, stomach pain and a type of intoxication. Do not exceed 1 t. powder (or 2 capsules) at a time. It’s best to start slowly with cayenne if there is nausea and vomiting.
- Chicken soup - it's one of those old remedies that your grandmother used. And it still works. Chicken soup is comforting and healing when you have the flu.
- Cranberry juice
- Chamomile tea
- Curcumin or tumeric - Consult your doctor before using. Tumeric is believed to have an anti-clotting effect. Higher amounts can also cause stomach upset.
- Garlic - Consult your doctor before using. Garlic has a blood clot-preventing agent. Touching it can cause a rash in highly sensitive people, although this is not a problem for most people.
- Garlic syrup - Consult your doctor before using
- Ginger - Consult your doctor before taking. May cause heartburn. For most people, it eases nausea.
- Green tea
- Hibiscus tea - Drink sparingly. Some species of hibiscus may not be recommended for pregnant women (and there are a lot of species).
- Honey – helps to soothe a sore throat. Honey can also be mixed with a little lemon for this purpose, as well.
- Lemon balm tea - Also safe for infants and children. This has a nice flavor and is soothing.
- Nutmeg - High doses (over 2 T powder) can cause nausea and vomiting, flushing and a fast heartbeat. OK to take in smaller doses (i.e. ½ t. or 1 capsule).
- Resveratrol - Couldn’t find information on the safety. May want to consult doctor. Resveratrol is found naturally in red wine.
- St Johns Wort – comes in capsules.
- Skullcap tea - Probably OK as tea, but you should consult your doctor before using it. Soothing for the nerves.
- Spearmint tea – nice flavor, soothing.
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin C - with bioflavonoids
- Vitamin E
- Zinc lozenges – for sore throat
If you are pregnant or nursing, you need to be especially careful about any medications or even natural flu remedies that you use. Before you use herbal flu remedies or antiviral drugs, double check for any side effects and make sure you understand any possible consequences. If you are pregnant, do this before you get sick!
