President Obama Declares State of EmergencyPresident Obama has declared a state of emergency in the U.S. because of swine flu, even as information from non-government sources say that cases of TRUE swine flu are minimal. Citing “millions of cases of infection country wide and “over 1000” deaths in the U.S., Barack Obama announced Friday evening (a time when presidents often make controversial announcements) that he has declared a state of emergency.
What does this mean for U.S. citizens? Obama, speaking in more general terms, did not exactly spell out the implications of his action. However, he did say that the move was implemented "in order to be prepared in the event of a rapid increase in illness across the nation that may overburden health care resources." Health officials will now be able "to temporarily waive certain standard federal requirements in order to enable US health care facilities to implement emergency operations plans to deal with the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic in the United States."
