Remedy for Stomach Flu

The remedy for stomach flu is fairly easy, but it must be followed faithfully. While there is no magic stomach flu cure, if properly handled, gastroenteritis will usually resolve itself in a few days.

The first step in stomach flu treatment is to determine if the stomach flu symptoms that you are seeing are actually for intestinal flu —and not swine flu symptoms or symptoms for another, more serious condition.

Once you have determined that your patient has gastroenteritis, you can proceed with your treatment for stomach flu.

Did you know that the only flu treatment that worked in 1918-19 was homeopathy? It's true, and it's been well documented!

Dr. Deborah Baker has written a book, Homeopathic/Herbal Flu Prevention and Cures that, not only includes homeopathic remedies for treatment AND prevention, but also includes dosages, the mystery for most non-professionals.

Stomach Virus Treatment

The truth is that most cases of stomach flu (gastroenteritis) resolve over time without specific stomach flu treatment. Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections, and most cases of intestinal flu are viral.

So, your primary goal for stomach flu treatment is simply to reduce the symptoms. And, the most important complication that you need to prevent is dehydration.

Your body cannot function without fluids. And dehydration is the loss of fluids from the body. Electrolytes (including important salts and minerals) are lost when your body is dehydrated.

Here are some medical doctors' suggestions for a remedy for stomach flu:

  • Allow your gastrointestinal tract to settle by not eating for a few hours. Not eating for a few hours will not hurt you. You MUST continue to drink, however.

  • If you are vomiting, sip small amounts of clear liquids (ginger ale, lime juice, ginger or peppermint tea, water, etc.) or suck on ice chips.

  • BRAT diet – Many doctors recommend giving the patient a bland diet consisting of bananas, rice, applesauce and dry toast. Apples help to soothe and heal the lining of the stomach and intestines. Bananas are easy to digest—and they are a rich source of potassium and magnesium.

A bland diet is easily digested and it is not likely to irritate your stomach and intestines (which are already inflamed). Chicken broth is sometimes soothing, as well.

Gradually reintroduce solids to the diet only after the diarrhea has stopped.

  • Give infants and children oral rehydration solutions to replace fluids and lost electrolytes. Oral rehydration solutions such as Pedialyte can replace lost fluids, minerals, and salts.

  • Avoid dairy products, caffeine, and alcohol until recovery is complete.

  • Get plenty of rest.

  • If you take "water pills" (diuretics), you may need to stop taking the medication during an acute episode of diarrhea, as directed by your doctor. These can contribute to your becoming dehydrated.

  • Your doctor may suggest an anti-diarrheal medicine for you to take.

In addition, if you have had a bout with diarrhea, much of your intestinal beneficial bacteria may have been lost. Eat some yogurt for a few days to replace the good bacteria, as an important part of your remedy for stomach flu. Yougurt, in addition, is very easily digested, and it will help you transition back to solid foods.

If you follow these remedy for stomach flu recommendations , the stomach flu duration should be shortened for you.

Mild dehydration can be treated by just drinking liquids. If, however, you develop more severe stomach flu symptoms, you need to see a doctor, or you might want to consult with doctors online .

Severe dehydration (more often a problem with young children or elderly people), may require hospitalization and intravenous fluids. Untreated severe dehydration can be life threatening.
