Stomach Flu Symptoms

Stomach flu symptoms can be confused with swine flu symptoms, but the two illnesses are actually very different. Symptoms of the flu can be similar to symptoms of stomach flu or intestinal flu, but there are distinct differences.

Both illnesses are contagious . However, they are caused by different viruses or germs, and you get them in different ways. And the stomach flu duration can be different from that of influenza.

The two main symptoms of stomach flu are diarrhea and vomiting. Some people also have headache, fever and abdominal cramping (stomach cramps). In addition, you can have any or all of these stomach flu symptoms with gastroenteritis – depending on the cause of the intestinal flu:

  • abdominal cramps
  • stomach pain
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • fever
  • headache
  • swollen lymph glands

Did you know that the only flu treatment that worked in 1918-19 was homeopathy? It's true, and it's been well documented!

Dr. Deborah Baker has written a book, Homeopathic/Herbal Flu Prevention and Cures that, not only includes homeopathic remedies for treatment AND prevention, but also includes dosages, the mystery for most non-professionals.

Severe Stomach Flu Symptoms

Most of the time, intestinal flu is not a serious illness. However, occasionally a person can become very ill, and, if untreated, the infection can become life-threatening.

The greatest danger in having a stomach flu is that you can become dehydrated. This is especially true for small children and the elderly. However, the danger exists for all.

Dehydration is a life threatening condition, so you want to make sure that this does not happen!

If any of these symptoms develop, a sick person should see a doctor:

  • sunken eyes
  • light-headedness
  • increased thirst
  • dry or sticky mucous membranes in the mouth
  • skin is not elastic. When you push your finger into the skin of a person who is dehydrated, the indentation stays—the skin does not fill in or bounce back.
  • not urinating or peeing. Decreased output of liquids.
  • decreased tears. If the person cries, there are no tears.
  • weakness
  • dizziness
  • person cannot drink liquids
  • sleepy, unaware of surroundings, or can't be awakened
  • fever that is higher than 101 degrees F
  • swollen abdomen or pain in the lower right part of the abdomen
  • blood in the vomit or stool
  • vomiting that lasts for more than 48 hours

These symptoms are signs of a more serious condition, most likely dehydration. Especially if the ill person continues to have diarrhea, vomiting or a fever, you can suspect dehydration. If you suspect dehydration, you should get the person to a doctor ASAP.

For someone not trained in medicine, it is very difficult to understand what you are dealing with. You might want to consider getting doctors online advice . It usually only takes a few minutes to get LIVE personal help and follow-up to your question.

Most of the time, having a stomach flu is a non-event. There is discomfort that lasts for a few days, but, it passes quickly, and there are no residual effects. Life gets back to normal.

Occasionally, stomach flu symptoms can be more serious. Or intestinal flu can be confused with swine flu. (About a third of swine flu victims do have diarrhea and vomiting--symptoms that are not seen very often in people with seasonal influenza) . In those cases, your sick person will need to see a physician.

Keep in mind that, you can consult with a doctor and get doctors online advice , often from specialists, and usually within a few minutes of asking your question.
