Survival Foods

Include some survival foods in your emergency food supply. In a natural disaster or other emergency, you may need some meals that are quick and easy to prepare.

While you can simply stock up on canned foods like tuna and chicken, you might want to consider having some complete meals, as well.

And you can purchase the emergency foods separately and stock your shelves with food from the grocery store, you can purchase freeze dried meals, or you can purchase a larger supply of food that would get you through a longer period of time.

Here are some foods to consider, for your emergency food storage…

Emergency Food Supply

Putting together an emergency food supply takes a little time and organization. Perhaps the trickiest part is making sure that you have all the ingredients that you’ll need for meals that you plan to have.

Keep your meal planning simple. After all, considering the worst possible situation, you will be serving meals in a very primitive way, without the conveniences of your kitchen and probably without electricity.

When you choose foods for your survival preparedness plan, choose simple, easy meals. And, if possible, use foods that are like the MREs (meals ready to eat), and that you might not have to cook.

Here are some possibilities:

  • Canned goods and other foods familiar to your family – If you choose to put your emergency food supply together yourself, make sure you have everything that you’ll need for each meal—and then rotate your food every 6 months. Don’t forget to include a manual can opener.

  • Evacuation kit or 72 hour emergency kit - You can purchase one of these already put together. They come with different specifications, and you’ll have to decide how many people you will be feeding and for how long.

  • Freeze dried meals - Unlike freeze dried meals in the past, many of these meals are quite tasty and inexpensive. In fact, a lot of people take them camping or on long wilderness hiking trips, regularly.

  • #10 Cans of freeze dried foods - This is usually better for longer term use, as it may be difficult to store the leftovers in a true emergency situation.

  • Bulk dehydrated foods - You can purchase individual fruits and vegetables to store for future use.

  • Your own dehydrated foods - If you have a large garden or you have access to local produce, you can dehydrate your own fruits and vegetables, using a dehydrator.

No matter how you put together your food storage supply, make sure you have a good recipe book for your stored foods, if you are storing individual ingredients, instead of complete meals.
