Living off the Grid, Temporarily!

Knowing some survival skills may make the difference between surviving a pandemic—or not making it! If you are quarantined, or choose to quarantine yourself, you may be totally on your own! Knowing what to do will help you to be comfortable—and safe!

The US government (and many other governments) have plans for mass quarantines, if they deem it to be necessary because of widespread illness during a flu pandemic.

If a quarantine is issued, you may be required to stay in your home for extended periods of time. No shopping, no visiting, no meetings or groups. You and your family—in your home!

The government plans to try to keep utilities on. And Homeland Security tells us on their website that the military will be responsible for doing that.

However, the pandemic plan also states that US citizens should plan to be without utilities and energy, should the government be unable to keep things running.

The plan is for a quarantine period of 6 weeks to 3 months. And the pandemic plan tells US citizens that they should not expect any assistance during this time. We will be TOTALLY on our own!

Survival Skills – Flu Epidemic
and Boating!

Did I mention that I spent several years cruising on a boat with my husband, Steve? You may be scratching your head, wondering why I mentioned living on a boat. Well, it’s really very simple. During that time, I learned a lot about independent living—survival skills that help you to do just about everything for yourself.

You see, when you’re on a boat, out of sight of land, in international waters or those of another country, you’re pretty much on your own! You have to be prepared to handle any situation that arises—from baking a loaf of bread to fixing a broken part on the engine—even being ready to provide first aid for a broken wrist!

I remember when Hurricane Floyd hit the northeastern U.S. coast a few years ago. My husband Steve and I remained on our boat during the storm. When it was finally over, life went on as usual for us.

I still remember how difficult it was for the millions of people (living on land) who lost their electricity for days. Ironically we had the necessities that the “land lubbers” lacked—lights, ability to cook, water, food—everything that we needed. And that was because we were prepared for anything! You can be too!

Nitro-Pak--The Emergency Preparedness Leader

I've written some articles to help you hone up on your survival skills. I hope they will give you some thoughts about what you can do for your family:

As you will see, survival skills are not complicated. However, a little forethought and preparation is in order.

Think about what you will do in the event of a quarantine, and get the appropriate items together, NOW. That way, if the time arrives, and you need to use these skills, you will have the items that you need. And your life will go on--almost as usual!
