There are also some less common signs of strep throat that you might see:

  • Pain in the stomach
  • Red skin rash
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Not feeling hungry
  • Body aches and tiredness

Usually symptoms of strep throat develop one to five days after a person is exposed to the streptococcus bacteria. But, strep throat can be tricky. It's actually possible, as it is with seasonal flu or mild swine flu to be asymptomatic, or to have no noticeable symptoms. Sometimes young children complain only of having a headache and stomachache—but no sore throat.

In addition, strep throat has a season, like seasonal flu, usually from November to April in the northern hemisphere. If you develop these symptoms at another time of year, consider that you might have pandemic H1N1.

Scarlet Fever

Sometimes strep throat symtoms develop into what is known as scarlet fever. This usually happens a few days after the first signs of strep throat.

Someone who has scarlet fever develops a very fine, rough to the touch (like sandpaper), sunburn-like rash over their face and upper body. The person will have a high fever of 101-104 F (38.3-40 C).

In addition, their tongue becomes bright red and has a flecked, strawberry-like appearance.

When a person with streptococcal bacteria gets a rash, it is now called scarlet fever. Scarlet fever is actually a reaction in your body, to the toxins or poisons produced by the strep bacteria.

Scarlet fever is not any more dangerous than strep throat, and it is treated in the same way. The rash will disappear in about 5 days, and, 1-3 weeks later, the skin in the rash areas, may peel off—much like a sunburn.

The symptoms of strep throat generally come quickly. While strep infection usually is not usually serious, untreated strep throat can lead to complications and, it is important to know if you really do have strep.

If you actually have another illness, like a severe case of pandemic swine flu , you may need to see your doctor immediately! In the meantime, you may get peace of mind by talking with a doctor on doctors online advice .
