What Causes Hurricanes?

Knowing what causes hurricanes is fascinating.

Atlantic hurricanes usually occur in the summer or fall, and they are some of the most destructive storms known to man.

Although tornadoes can pack more wind, hurricanes can be more damaging. They can last much longer than tornadoes, and they cause wind AND water damage.

People who live along the Gulf or Atlantic coastlines can expect to see damage to roofs and foundations of houses, broken windows, electrical outages, roads closed, floods and empty store shelves.

If you are in a hurricane evacuation zone and you don’t leave the area, you could be trapped in your home.

And the aftermath of a hurricane could last for weeks…

Atlantic Hurricanes

Hurricanes are formed when there is a mixture of warm and cool air. When warm, humid air rises from the 80 degree+ ocean water, it meets the cooler air higher in the atmosphere.

The humid water vapor condenses and forms storms and rain. The air above is warmed, causing it to rise—and that leaves room for more warm vapors to rise from the ocean below.

As this cycle continues, wind starts to twist or swirl, and the eye of a hurricane is born…

Knowing what causes hurricanes is interesting, but it doesn't keep you safe.

Preparing for a hurricane is important, but you must start months ahead of time if you want to make sure that you are ready. Don’t wait until the last minute, or you might find that you are caught unprepared!
