When to Wash Hands

Do you know when to wash hands? Knowing HOW to wash hands is only half the battle. You must also know WHEN handwashing is important.

Hand washing is the easiest way to prevent disease.

Such a simple process – but, so many people neglect to do it! Handwashing can kill germs on the spot, and it can wash germs down the sink. Yet too many people simply don't take the time to clean their hands!

Get into the habit of washing your hands frequently, and you will find that you (and your family) will be healthier in the long-run. It only takes a minute or two, and it will save you lots of downtime from being ill or running to the bathroom with diarrhea.

Here are some reminders for when to wash hands:

  • When you use the rest room – and any time you come into contact with fecal material. That includes when you change a diaper or pet an animal.

  • Anytime you touch raw meat or meat juices. Raw meat can be contaminated with bacteria that can make you sick.

  • Before you eat. Always make sure that you have clean hands before you touch food that you will eat.

  • Before you prepare food. Get into the habit of washing your hands before you prepare and/or serve food.

  • After you handle money. Money is filthy and you have no idea where it has been! Did you ever notice that some toll collectors wear vinyl gloves to collect money? That's because they know how dirty money is.

  • When you touch things in public places. Including door knobs, grocery cart handles, bingo markers, magazines and books at the doctor's office, etc. This is especially important if there is a pandemic. But it can be important anytime.

  • After working in the garden.

  • After you handle pets.

  • After touching anything or anyone in a sick person's room.

You will think of other occasions. The main thing to keep in mind is that clean hands help to keep you healthy. Wash your hands frequently, and you will find that you don't get sick nearly as often. If you learn when to wash your hands, you can make it a good habit, and pretty soon you won't give it a second thought!
